Starting couples counselling is a big step, and it helps to know what you are signing up for. Here are the questions to ask before couples counselling begins, and what usually happens in the first session.
Questions to ask before couples counselling starts
Should both of us attend the first session, or can one of us start alone? How do you handle things one partner tells you privately? Do you see each partner individually as well as together? Which approach do you use? What languages do you offer? What is the fee, the session length and the cancellation policy?
What happens in the first couples counselling session
Most first sessions focus on getting to know you both: how you met, what has been going wrong, and what each of you hopes for. Your counsellor explains how sessions and confidentiality will work. You do not need to resolve every disagreement before you start.
How to prepare together
Each of you can think about one or two things you would like to change, and one thing you appreciate about the relationship. For online sessions, choose a private space where you can sit together comfortably and will not be interrupted by children or family.
Frequently asked questions
Should both partners attend the first couples counselling session?
Usually yes, but it is not essential. One partner can start alone and the other can join later. Ask the counsellor what they recommend.
How many couples counselling sessions are needed?
It varies with the concerns and how long they have been going on. Your counsellor will discuss this with you after the first session.
Is couples counselling only for couples about to separate?
No. Couples come for many reasons, including communication problems, adjusting to marriage or parenthood, and pre-marital counselling.
