Psychologist vs Counsellor vs Psychiatrist: Who Should You See?

A simple guide to the difference, and how to decide where to start.

Psychologist vs counsellor vs psychiatrist: when you decide to get help, the different titles can be confusing. Do you need a psychologist, a counsellor, a therapist or a psychiatrist? Here is a plain-language guide to help you choose where to start. You can always ask a professional whether they are the right fit for your concern.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in mental health. Psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medicine. You might start with a psychiatrist if symptoms are severe, if you are struggling to function day to day, or if you think medicine might be needed.

Psychologist

A psychologist has studied psychology and is trained to assess and help with emotional and behavioural difficulties through talking therapies such as CBT. Psychologists do not prescribe medicine. In India, clinical psychologists are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI); you can ask any psychologist about their qualifications and registration.

Counsellor and therapist

“Counsellor” and “therapist” are broader terms. Counsellors usually help with current difficulties, such as stress, relationship problems, decisions and life changes. Training varies, so it is reasonable to ask about a counsellor’s qualifications and experience with your concern.

Psychologist vs counsellor vs psychiatrist: who should I see first?

For everyday stress, overthinking, relationship problems or a difficult period, a counsellor or psychologist is a good place to start. For long-lasting anxiety, panic or depression, a psychologist offering psychotherapy may help. If symptoms are severe or you think you may need medicine, see a psychiatrist; many people see a psychiatrist and a psychologist at the same time.

If you are unsure, start somewhere. A good professional will tell you if someone else would be better placed to help.

Frequently asked questions

Can a psychologist prescribe medicine in India?

No. Only medical doctors, such as psychiatrists, can prescribe medicine. Psychologists help through talking therapies.

Is a counsellor the same as a psychologist?

Not always. A psychologist has formal training in psychology; counsellor is a broader title and training varies. Ask about qualifications before you start.

Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist for depression?

If symptoms are mild to moderate, a psychologist is often a good start. If they are severe, long-lasting or you are struggling to function, see a psychiatrist too.
